With 4.5-week grades posting on September 2, reflect on your experience in AP Language so far. What has been going well for you, what has been challenging, and what is one thing you need to improve moving forward?

Prompt Response: My experience in AP Language hasn't been so bad as I thought it'd be. I won't lie, I do find it a bit challenging but I know I'll be able to handle it eventually. Things that have been challenging is being timed when writing during class because I'm not too used to being timed and I usually always use most of my time to plan everything out. What has been going well is getting out of my comfort zone and communicating with the people around me and sharing our ideas together. I remember that I was nervous to present that day, but I realized that since everyone was going to do it, I would be fine doing it as well. It wasn't the best presentation, but I felt better seeing everyone else doing it as well. One thing I need to improve going forward is getting used to being timed in class and finishing my work on time without turning it in late. Summary: We started writing our argumentative body paragraph and explaining why we considered a "good...

Think about a time when you made a claim or gave an opinion, but someone asked you, "why?" or How do you know?"

Prompt Response: One time, I was talking to someone about how I didn' t drink coffee anymore. They asked me, "why?" I explained that I wanted to change what I was consuming and make different choices about what I drink.  I used my own experience as evidence because I noticed that I had gotten used to drinking coffee and wanted to change that habit. Explaining my evidence was important because if I only said that I stopped drinking coffee with no reason behind my choice, it wouldn't explain why I made that choice. By explaining, the other person would understand where my opinion came from and why I made that decision. Summary: We started reading a passage and going over how we'd write an argument body paragraph. Reflection: I learned that I had to come up with a claim and decide how I'd back up my evidence without using any outside source. I also learned how everyone has a different perspective when it came to deciding if a "good" kill was justifiabl...

Which learning method do you enjoy the most?

Prompt Response: I mostly enjoy class discussions even if I'm more of a quiet person because it helps me observe my classmates opinions. It also helps me when I see my classmates ask a question that I was also stuck on and see when the teacher briefly explains it. I like class discussions as well because everyone shares their point of perspective and it's interesting to see how they back it up with evidence that reasonates with their statement. It also helps notice who agrees on the same things and who disagrees and why they do so.Class discussions help see what everyone thinks and gives the opportunity for everyone to say what they believe and let the class see if they agree and if they don't, they can help you by explaining why your statement isn't right and why. Summary: Today we had to choose a claim, whether it was Aristotle's, Plato's or Jean Paul's and create 5 claims and evidence to back it up.  Reflection: I learmed about the philosophical claims t...

Describe something you will never fully understand

Prompt Response: Something I will never fully understand is why do people get with someone just to lie to them or end up leading them on? Why is it that people start dating at such a young age and believe it's right to lie to their partner just because? I've always wondered about that. I can't say I've experienced it, but I've experienced being with someone and them talking bad about me withh their best friend. To me, it doesn't make sense to do so, like if you don't like your partner anymore, why not leave them? Is it hard just to end your relationship when you feel like you're falling out of love? Personally, I'd prefer leaving someone instead of leading them on until they find out. The feeling of finding out isn't the best, so I wouldn't want to hurt them. I'm more of a person that is straight up and admits that "this won't work out anymore, but I wish you the best and hope you find someone that'll treat you better" t...

Describe one thing that makes you different from other people

Prompt Response: One thing that makes me different from other people is that I tend to overthink things way before it actually happens. It's not the best because it consumes my thoughts and it's complicated to think that it'll turn out good. I believe it's always been that way for me because growing up, I've noticed how things seem so easy to others while I struggle and stress out about it. An example would be when I present in front of people that I don't know well. When I notice it's about to be my turn, I try to stay calm and imagine nobody is there but as soon as I get up for my turn, I feel myself heating up because of the nervousness and can't look at  the audience. I've tried to, but it just doesn't work and only makes me more anxious. As of now, I'm stressing over  the SAT. I don't know when to take it, or if I'll do well. I've always been bad in math so I don't have much faith in myself.  Summary:We learned how to us...

How has living in or around Atlanta influenced the way you see your community, culture, or identity? If you were speaking to someone unfamiliar with Atlanta, what would you want them to understand about your community?

Prompt Response: Living in Atlanta influenced me to see the city as a busy place with a diversity of ethnic groups and diverse amount of languages. The city is full of many buildings including the biggest aquarium which is the reason why some tourists come and visit. The city is always packed with traffic in the afternoons which can be hectic for people who are leaving work and wanting to get home soon. If I was speaking to someone unfamiliar with Atlanta, I would want them to know that our community is big and diverse, that they'd see people of many races here and hear them speak different languages. I would tell them that it's a pretty big community and wherever you go, it is most likely to be full. I would want them to understand that heavy traffic is basically normalized here and if you'd want to get somewhere early during the afternoon, it's best if you leave your home before 5 because after that, traffic gets heavy. Summary: We analyzed the speech Keisha Lance Bo...

What is the most creative thing you have ever made?

Prompt Response: The most creative thing I've ever made was a portrait of one of my favorite artists. I consider it the most creative thing because I've never really been good at art or drawing so I was very hesitant when I had to do a portrait as my assignment. I remember telling my art teacher about it and how I had no faith in myself and I'm sure she was sick of me eventually because I would always ask her to check it and recommend how I can make it better during every class period. As time went on, I started noticing that it was coming out great and maybe I was capable of making it look good even if it was my first time doing a portrait. Once I finished, I showed it to my teacher and she was proud of me and told me I should never doubt myself if I've never tried it out. She ended up displaying it in her class which made me proud of my work, but I asked for it at the end of the school year so now it's displayed in my room and I always show it off to anyone that ...

Describe a time you felt completely lost

Prompt Response:A time I felt completely lost was during summer after 9th grade. I was so lost with everything because I was moving schools, it was my sisters, moms, dads, and little sisters birthday in the span of 3 months. Besides that we had just moved here, enrolling into a new school was something I didn't want to do. I should've been used to it since I've moved about 6 times and left friends behind but maybe because I was older it felt different. I didn't want to leave that school and move to Lakeside because I was sure nobody in that school like people from Ck. To make things worse, I didn't get my schedule on time so I was very lost that first day it was embarassing and nerve racking because I knew nobody so I couldn't rely on anyone for anything. It was worse when in my homeroom, girls would talk bad about people that went to Cross Keys but I couldn't say anything because I was afraid they'd talk bad about me too. Those first weeks I had to tak...

Write about something that you believed as a child

Prompt response: As a child, I used to believe that the moon would follow me whenever I went out with my parents at night and during car rides. I would look out the window and wouldn't take my eyes off of it because then it wouldn't be there when we took a turn so I'd believe it got lost. I thought it was because it knew where we were going so it'd follow us always. I never really questioned why it happened because my sister would say the same thing and it seemed normal to me. Even though I've grown up now and understand the actual reason, I sometimes think back to how I'd stare at the sky watching the moon follow us and shine so bright.  Summary: We talked about claims, how they have to be arguable, and how they can't just be a simple statement of fact. Reflection: I learned how there are three different claims and how each is different in their own way. It seems like the easiest one is claim of policy but I wouldn't know until I try doing it myself.I ...

Think about an argument or disagreement that you wish you could have handled differently. What happened, what was your goal, and what would you do differently now?

Prompt Response: An argument I wish I could have handled differently would be when I took a piece of clothing from my sister not caring enough to ask if she was going to use it that day. What happened was she always lets me borrow her things but that day was different because she was already in a bad mood and doing that only made her more upset though it wasn't intentional. My goal was to make her calm down and explain that she borrows my clothes and I don't say anything to her. What I would do differently is set my goal which would be convince her to agree in sharing clothes. I wouldn't argue about her wearing mines without her telling me anything, instead I would admit that we were both in the wrong for doing that while thinking it was okay without asking first. I would make an excuse such as explain that if we agree to share clothes, we wouldn't have these arguments anymore and wouldn't have to waste time asking if we can borrow a piece of clothing when we'r...

Think of a time when you tried to persuade someone to agree with you, change their mind, or do something you wanted. What were you trying to persuade them to do or believe? How did you use ethos, pathos, or logos to persuade them? Which appeal was most effective and why?

Prompt Response: A time I was trying to persuade someone to change their mind was when I wanted to start going out with my friends since everyone I knew was able to do it but me. I was trying to persuade my mom to agree on letting me go out and enjoy my teenage years without involving drugs or anything like that. I used ethos by using myself as the speaker because I've never used drugs before or committed a wrong act. By using myself, I explained how she can trust me on not doing bad stuff because the one time I went out, I didn't do anything wrong. I used pathos to show her that she can see my location and see everywhere I'd go. This helps by giving her a sense of security and not having to worry about me going some where she's not aware of. I used logos by giving her specific facts (where I was planning to go and with who) and a plan on everything instead of just simply saying " Please let me go out." The appeal that was most effective for me was pathos bec...

As you grow older and face new experiences, what issue or topic do you'll think have to stand up and debate most often, whether with friends, family or society?

Prompt: An issue I think I'll have to stand up and debate most often would be about my decisions I'll make in life. The reason I think I'll have to face this problem is because my friends and family could argue about what they want me to do in the future and how my decisions could affect me. I think it's important for me to be able to explain my choices and decisions and stand up for what I believe is right for me. In general, society, friends and family can expect me to make certain decisions that they believe are "right" choice. Sometimes, I believe it's important to listen to other's opinions but just because I do so doesn't mean I'll agree, I'll only learn from people's perspectives. Summary: Today in class, we learned about what an argument is and the three rhetorical appeals are.  Reflection: I learned that everything is an argument. It impacted me by giving me the knowledge of comprehending how each rhetoric appeal is different ...

3 Goals that I want to Achieve this Year

This year, I have a few goals I want to achieve. My three main goals would have to be to get atleast a 4 or 5 on the AP exam, to pass every class with a 95 or above, and to pass my EOC for US history. The reason why I have chosen these as my main goals is because they all are involved with my academics and I know they will have an impact on my transcript and the opportunities to attend any college. I want to get atleast a 4 or 5 on the AP exam because I want to be able to receive the credit and so that it can knock out the language classes for college if applicable. I want to pass all my classes with a 95 or above because I've been maintaining all A's since freshmen year and I want to continue to do so until my senior year. I've always felt that having high grades showed that I take all my classes seriously and will make my mom proud with my studies. I also want to pass my EOC for US history because I don't want to repeat the class my senior year when I could just get ...
